New Figurative Artists

Cavalier Galleries is pleased to introduce three distinguished new artists to our roster:
Janice Weissman, Paul McCormack, and Paul Oxborough.
New works by each of these artists will be included in our Contemporary Realism exhibition (April 7 - April 30) at Project 3W57.

Janice Urnstein Weissman (b. 1944) hails from St. Louis, Missouri. She received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and her MFA from the University of Cincinnati. Though she began painting in an Impressionist style, Weissman turned to Realism to depict her figures. She focuses on the tattoo sub-culture, which she refers to as "Living Canvases." Her body art-covered models explore what it means to have art inked on the body, and what messages they are trying to convey. She has shown in galleries and museums all over the world, and also works as a teacher at both the college and high school levels. She says, "I am the re-teller of their stories. The pain and the exhilaration of their statement compound the freedom of expression that my female models endure."

Paul McCormack (b. 1962) is from Rahway, New Jersey, and he attended the DuCret School of the Arts in Plainfield, NJ. McCormack is known for his oil and watercolor portraits, such as Karen in Black and Karen in White. His realistic figures boast beautiful and natural skin tones, creating a luminous and enchanting effect that draws viewers into these intimate portraits. His work has been exhibited internationally, and he has taught at several schools and museums including the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts, the Newark Museum, and the New Zealand Art Schools. McCormack has also been published several times in Splash Retrospective and The Artist's Magazine.

Paul Oxborough (b. 1965) studied at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and Atelier Lesueur, a  program rooted in the French academic tradition. He has exhibited at both the British and Scottish National Portrait Gallery, the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, and several other notable museums. Oxborough's masterful brushstrokes and ability to capture and play with light make his paintings truly stunning. His work ranges from portraits and interiors to outdoor figures and landscapes.

Steve McCurry : Renowned Documentary Photographer

It was announced on March 11, 2014 that Steve McCurry will be awarded the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA). McCurry is being honored with the Photography Appreciation Award by the Dubai organization that supports and encourages Dubai's participation in the arts.

McCurry is famous for the iconic image, Afghan Girl one of the most prevalent photos of our generation. The girl in the photo is Sharbat Gula, a refugee living in Pakistan during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Her portrait was featured on the cover of the June 1985 issue of National Geographic Magazine. 17 years later, McCurry found Gula, now at the age of 30, living in a remote region of Afghanistan. This story is truly remarkable, but it's only part of McCurry's illustrious career.

Afghan Girl, Pakistan

McCurry was born in a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended Penn State University, studying film. After working for a local newspaper, he took up on his travels, starting in India. He then crossed into Pakistan during the Russian Invasion of Afghanistan, and was the first to show the world what was going on through images. Since then, McCurry has been all over the globe - South America, Cambodia, Yemen, and countless other countries. He's won the Robert Capa Gold Medal, the National Press Photographers Award, and the first prize award from the World Press Photo four times.

He recently spoke at Georgetown University as part of the Lecture Fund's Arts and Politics Lecture Series. He said, “One of the most important points that I should remind myself of when doing a story is to look for situations that I passionately care about. At the end of the day, the pictures that I care about and that are interesting are pictures of stories that I thought very deeply about" (quoted in The Hoya). You'll love this:
In April, over 200 egg sculptures will be scattered across New York City for the world’s biggest egg hunt. The Big Egg Hunt is sponsored by Fabergé, the famous jewelry house and makers of the iconic bejeweled eggs of the same name. World renowned artists, designers, and other creative types have been invited to make their own unique, 2 ½ foot tall egg. All proceeds go to the charities, The Elephant Family and Studio in a School.

Our own artist, Robert Farber, has gotten in on the fun, too. You may know Farber for his fashion photography and erotic nudes, so his egg should be very interesting! About the project, Farber said, “The two greatest creative challenges that I have experienced is to try to enhance what God has already perfected: the woman’s body and a simple egg.” Check out this great behind-the-scenes video of  the making of Robert Farber's big egg (Filmed and edited by Blake Farber).

People who enter to join the hunt can have the opportunity to win Fabergé prizes with a combined retail price of over $125,000 (we’re talking emeralds, rubies, and diamonds). As stated on official website, “Fabergé views The Big Egg Hunt as a perfect medium with which to celebrate artistry and creativity, whilst supporting two deserving charities – raising much needed funds for needy children in New York City as well as for some of the world’s most endangered animals.”
