Larry Poons, born in 1937, continues to this day to produce impressive and fresh paintings as an icon of abstract expressionism.  Throughout his career, he has focused on bold abstraction and distinctive applications of paint to the canvas, often using unconventional methods such as pouring and throwing of paint. In this work, “Ballerina of Darts”, created in 2012, a series of small gestures and fields of color build across the canvas creating a truly dynamic composition. Poons began his artistic training in the 1950’s at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and achieved early success with a one-man show at the famed Green Gallery in 1963, followed by his inclusion in a 1965 exhibition at MoMa titled “The Responsive Eye”.  His work has been featured in numerous Museum exhibitions over the last five decades, and is also included in the permanent collections of such prestigious institutions as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY; Tate Modern, London, United Kingdom; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY. Poons currently resides and works in New York. Special Exhibition Celebrating 30 Years

The exhibition will be on view in our New York location through December 2, 2016, with a reception Thursday, November 3 from 6-8pm. Established in 1986 in Stamford, Connecticut, Cavalier Galleries has since expanded to three premier exhibition spaces in New York City, Greenwich, Connecticut, and Nantucket, Massachusetts. Over the years, the gallery has grown to represent an impressive stable of painters, sculptors, and photographers working in a variety of genres.  The galleries feature rotating exhibitions focused on contemporary realism, important maritime paintings, abstract expressionism, regional landscapes, contemporary photography, and a diverse selection of sculptures. Cavalier Galleries also presents regular outdoor sculpture exhibitions in Greenwich and Nantucket, as well as monumental public sculpture placements in New York City.
