Viewers are immediately drawn into DeNiro's unique artistic vision, sensing something dark and secretive that one cannot quite grasp.
De Niro applied the formal concerns of the Abstract Expressionist movement to a technical framework not unlike realism, making his paintings at once related to the movement and removed from it. This confluence of contradictory ideologies results in an evolved aesthetic that places De Niro in a class of his own.
Selected works include landscapes, still lifes and portraits in oil and pastel created between 1960 and 1987. The collection can be seen alongside the canvases of De Niro's teacher, Hans Hofmann, Cleve Gray, Wolf Kahn, Doris Lee, Reuben Nakian, and Charles Green Shaw.
