Red Dot Miami 2009

Red Dot Miami was an exceptional art fair and with one of the premier booths, Cavalier was at the forefront of the Miami art scene last week.

Jim Rennert was once again on-hand to speak with clients about his new monumental sculptures and was as well received in Miami as he was in the Hampton's show this summer, selling five of his pieces at the fair.

The self-taught Dutch artist, Damien Hunin's work was also very popular along with the galleries' newest artist, Peregrine Heathcote.

Maarten Platje

It is our great privilege to present Maarten Platje's newest and most ambitious painting to date, The Council of War on Board 'De Seven Provinciën' 10 June 1666.

This masterpiece, which took over a year to complete, is a detailed historical reconstruction of the date's events. The work was inspired by a grisaille drawing by another famous Dutch painter, Willem van de Velde (the Elder). Van de Velde completed his drawing in 1666 but never created a full-color painting. Platje intended to "finish the job in a full blaze of colors, to complete what Van de Velde started centuries ago."

As a nod to his inspiration, Platje included Willem van de Velde in his painting-- you can see him sketching the council of war in a boat to the right of the flagship vessel. Van de Velde's sketch is part of the Rijks Museum collection in Amsterdam.

The painting is scheduled to tour prominent art museums in Europe and be entered in international maritime painting competitions during the next year.

ArtHamptons

Art Hamptons was a great success and we truly enjoyed connecting with many of our wonderful clients as well as meeting a plethora of new and eager collectors.

The star of ArtHamptons was by far Jim Rennert who came from Utah to help install and unveil his two new monumental sculptures, Opportunity and A Step Ahead. Both his indoor and outdoor sculptures were incredibly well received and much talked about at the fair.

Another highlight was when Jim's sculpture, The Entrepreneur, sold to a new client, closing out the edition on his breakout piece. It was a profound moment for the artist as well as the collector, who was incredibly happy to have secured such an inspiring piece of art.

Robert De Niro, Sr. Exhibition

Cavalier Galleries at 34 Main, Nantucket is currently offering a rare peek into the critically acclaimed career of Robert De Niro, Sr. Touching on highlights from the artist's extensive body of work, the show draws parallels between De Niro's unique mélange of abstraction and realism with other prominent Abstract Expressionists who together dominated the New York art scene after 1940. Viewers are immediately drawn into DeNiro's unique artistic vision, sensing something dark and secretive that one cannot quite grasp.

De Niro applied the formal concerns of the Abstract Expressionist movement to a technical framework not unlike realism, making his paintings at once related to the movement and removed from it. This confluence of contradictory ideologies results in an evolved aesthetic that places De Niro in a class of his own.

Selected works include landscapes, still lifes and portraits in oil and pastel created between 1960 and 1987. The collection can be seen alongside the canvases of De Niro's teacher, Hans Hofmann, Cleve Gray, Wolf Kahn, Doris Lee, Reuben Nakian, and Charles Green Shaw. Art Hamptons Pre Registration

NEW ARTIST: William Beebe

We are pleased to announce a new addition to our stable of exceptional marine painters, William Beebe.

A traditional realist, William paints exclusively in oil as he feels it is the best medium to capture the historical wooden schooners of the 19th and 20th centuries.

A graduate of the University of Maryland in Fine Art, his work has been shown at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine and at the Coos Art Museum in Coos Bay, Oregon, where he won a Merit award in the 12th Annual Maritime Art Exhibition. Additionally, he has been a part of several Marine Masters Exhibitions in Mystic, Connecticut and Thomaston, Maine and the 26th Annual International Marine Art Exhibition at the Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport.

Bill currently resides in Williamsburg, Virginia with his wife where he continues his marine painting and to be inspired by his love for the American schooners and life along the coast.

Edward Minoff Reception

We want to thank everyone who came to celebrate the opening of Edward Minoff's Show Waves last Thursday. With over 100 guests in attendance, our Greenwich gallery was filled to capacity with Edwards admirers, family, students and collectors.

Jacob Collins came to support his former student as well as several teachers from the respected The Grand Central Academy where Minoff teaches.

It was a trully wonderful and successful evening. Again, our heartfelt thanks to everyone who came.

Minoff Exhibition Previewed in The New Criterion

Finally, a word about an upcoming show in Connecticut.2 The classical realist Edward Minoff has done for the seascape what Jacob Collins has accomplished with the figure. A former graffiti artist and professional cartoonist who has dedicated his life to classical art after meeting Collins in the late 1990s, Minoff has become a master of the breaking wave and an authority on the rolling surf. In his paintings, green translucent waves perfectly curl up in arcs and dips and ripples. Minoff grew up observing the beach at Fire Island, Long Island and continues to make his studies there: topographical studies of water and wind, color studies of misty sunlight at dawn, compositional studies of ideal moments of flood. He never works from photographs, one of the precepts of Collins’s schools and something that separates the work from photo-realism.

Until now Minoff has worked small, perfecting his seascapes over five years in jewel-like horizontal compositions. Starting last October, Minoff determined to take on a more epic seascape composition in the manner of Collins’s “Eastholm Project,” which I wrote about in June 2008. Along with several smaller paintings, including some poetic moonscapes, Minoff will be unveiling his eight-foot wide painting, Waves, at Cavalier Galleries in Greenwich this month. I recently paid a studio visit to see Minoff apply the finishing touches. With his growing ambition and focused talent, Minoff is an artist to watch and enjoy.

New Work by Nina Maguire

Nina Maguire My New York, 2009 acrylic on board 12 x 12 inches

Nina Maguire has created a unique painting which is a compilation of seven of her most familiar New York City scenes including Washington Square Park, Brooklyn’s Promenade, East Side Drive, Central Park and the Flatiron building. It is a painting of personal and professional reminiscence as she looks back at her love of the City over the years and the ways she has found pleasure portraying it in her art. Titled My New York, the painting is composed in a windows theme, with miniature variations of her paintings separated into panes. These windows into the artist’s world reveal an intimacy and emotion derived from having lived in the New York City environs all her life. The theme is complemented by Maguire’s frame choice, with the painting mounted under glass in a contemporary thin-line frame with a gold-leaf edge.

Steve McCurry Show Opens

After preparing the gallery on Wednesday, our wonderful Gallery Assistant Charlotte helped Ron hang the 33-piece show. The exhibition features newly-released images from Steve McCurry's recent travels in India, the Middle East and Asia. The large-scale works are truly breathtaking and offer a window into the world we see behind the framer's glass.

The artist will give a free lecture at UCONN Stamford next Saturday, the 25th and the artist reception will follow that night at the gallery from 6 to 8pm.

As a note, to protect the photographs from sunlight, we will be lowering the blinds in the afternoon, but we are still open and encourage you to visit the gallery and see the exhibition which runs through May 4th. We look forward to seeing you!

Peter Fiore

Peter Fiore was a finalist and Honorable Mention recipient at the Art Renewal Center's 5th Annual International Salon.

His painting, "Autumn Evening" won the Honorable Mention and "January Shade" was selected as a finalist out of the 1600 plus entries received from around the world.

Peter was also a finalist for his landscape paintings in the 2007 and the 2006 ARC Salon Competitions.

Below is a video of Peter as he paints one of his favorite fields. It's a fascinating look into his process--from preparing the canvas to painting his signature on the finished work. The video is sped up and only runs about 2 minutes.

New Work by Nicholas Berger

As a young artist, Nick spent a significant amount of time with Andrew Wyeth, even staying with his sister for a time. Wyeth's influence is evident in Nick's work, even as he branches out and experiments with new subject matter and styles.

Just weeks after their last visit, Andrew Wyeth passed away. Nick inscribed these words on the back of his latest painting titled, Andrew and Betsy:

"This painting helped me understand my feelings on his passing. This is their house and his studio. The sycamore trees are like lovers and how they grow together. Now, I am lost and free and very, very thankful."

STEVE McCURRY Stories From The Field

Many of Steve's photographs have become modern day icons- most notably his infamous image of The Afghan Girl which appeared on the cover of National Geographic in 1985.

On Saturday, April 25th, Steve will be giving a lecture on his amazing career on the road: his numerous close calls, his search for the Afghan Girl, and the many fascinating people he has met along the way. After the lecture, we will host an artist reception at our Greenwich Gallery.

EDWARD MINOFF Waves: Synthesis of a Monumental Seascape

We are preparing for a very exciting solo show in May for Edward Minoff. This exhibition gives collectors a glimpse into the working process of a classically-trained artist. His ability to capture the ocean in a breathtakingly sublime manner through on-site sketches and studio work is fascinating. Minoff’s youth belies the extraordinary maturity of his paintings.

He wrote an amazing essay on his process- how a thumbnail sketch of the beach turns into a monumental work that is so grand in scope it allows the viewer to become lost in it.
