THINK BIG New York Anniversary Tour

with artist Jim Rennert

Cavalier Gallery is pleased to announce the one year installation anniversary of the monumental bronze sculpture by Salt Lake City artist Jim Rennert titled THINK BIG in New York City.

To celebrate THINK BIG officially joining the ranks of the iconic monuments of New York City, Jim Rennert visited New York and went on a tour of some of the most celebrated landmarks of the city with his life-size rendition of THINK BIG.

Jim Rennert and THINK BIG began the tour at the Grand Army Plaza in front of the Plaza Hotel and continued from there with stops at Rockefeller Center, Macy’s, Times Square, the Stock Exchange and Charging Bull. The tour finished at the monumental THINK BIG sculpture in Union Square where Rennert dressed his sculpture in a festive holiday scarf handmade by his wife. The tour was filmed by award winning documentary filmmaker, Paul Lazarus.

THINK BIG represents a man with his eyes fixed upward towards the Manhattan skyline. The larger-than-life figure gazes towards the powerful buildings and the companies that lie within, serving as a reminder that when we “think big,” we can achieve anything. As we emerge from the stifling recession, THINK BIG aims to remind us that the “American Dream” is very much alive and available to all who seek it.

K. Henderson Wins Merit Award at Contemporary Realism Biennial 2014

Congratulations to K. Henderson on her award-winning piece at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art Contemporary Realism Biennial!

Her painting, "Sing Cat," was awarded a Jurors Merit Awards by Frank Bernarducci, Director and Partner of Bernarducci.Meisel.Gallery. 

This juried exhibition is held every two years to showcase some of the world's best artists in the Realism genre. With over 700 entries, only 34 were chosen nationally, and just 22 pieces were invited from around the globe. 

We are not surprised that K. Henderson was chosen to exhibit, nor that she was awarded such a great honor! With masterful skill and beauty, her trompe l'oeil paintings are exemplary of the genre. 

Some of Henderson's works will be exhibited at our own Contemporary Realism show in Greenwich beginning on October 20th.

Rose Freymuth-Frazier Magazine Feature

Rose Freymuth-Frazier has a major feature coming out in September! Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, an Australian publication, is "the place where the dark, the evocative, and the beautifully bizarre are celebrated." 

Rose's work is certainly all these things, and more, as we've shown you on the blog before. This issue of Beautiful Bizarre will include a 12 page editorial on Rose, which is out on September 1st.

ArtRod by Steven Vaughan

Exciting news! Earlier this week, artist Steven Vaughan unveiled the ArtRod in LA.


The ArtRod began as a 1970 Saab, which Vaughan re-designed and remodeled, and then painted on it in his hyper-realistic style. The car is an anti-war statement, completely covered in war-themed narratives, and ends with Marilyn Monroe holding the peace sign on the back. The ArtRod is truly one-of-a-kind, and is estimated at $1.2 million. It will be at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California.

Vaughan touchingly dedicated the unveiling to Robin Williams, and announced that some of the proceeds earned at events with the ArtRod will be donated to those suffering with depression.

Nantucket Race Week & Maritime Paintings

In honor of Nantucket Race Week we are celebrating the art of sailing at Cavalier Galleries.  Our ongoing Important Maritime Paintings Exhibition includes some of the best known historical artists, as well as some of the most renowned contemporary painters in this field. Several of our contemporary artists have even created works honoring the famed Opera House Cup Regatta and the Rainbow Fleet Parade!

This show is up until September 1st!

Maritime and marine painting were particularly popular genres beginning in the 17^th century. These paintings depict ships at sea, sometimes solitary or with human figures. They can also be purely seascapes, incorporating the water, sky, and the shoreline.

Here are some highlighted artists:

Marteen Platje - Born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in 1967, Maarten Platje studied at the Ars Aemula Naturae Art Academy in Leiden. Maarten Platje began exhibiting his work in 1986 and built a reputation as an outstanding marine painter. In 1996 Maarten Platje was officially invited by the Royal Dutch Navy to embark on a frigate during NATO operations in the Mediterranean waters around the former Yugoslavia. His paintings are on a permanent display at the Naval Museum in Den Helder and at the Museum of the Marine Corps of the Royal Netherlands Navy in Rotterdam. Maarten Platje’s marine paintings are carefully-orchestrated compositions created from an assembly of several old pictures, old drawings and ship models discovered at antique stores or placed at his disposal from private collections.

John Stobart - Renowned maritime artist John Stobart was born in Leicester, England. At an early age, he developed an interest in art and studied at the Derby College of Art, and then at the Royal Academy Schools in London. He became interested in maritime painting during a voyage he took to Africa, and eventually he moved to the United States in the 1960s, where his career really took off. Stobart focused on the harbors of America, and the important ships and scenes from maritime history. He quickly became the most sought-after maritime painter, exhibiting in numerous galleries and museums, including the New Bedford Whaling Museum and the Salmagundi Club. His works are also found in countless private collections. He has published two books of his paintings, and was featured on a PBS television series.

Li Xiao - Xiao was born in 1957 in Shanghai, China.In 1976, he attended the Shanghai School of Fine Arts, where he honed his skills as an oil painter. After three years of strict training, he graduated with excellence and became a member of the Shanghai Youth Artists Association. He had several important achievements before he came to the United States to attend the school of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 1987.  Nature is a constant source of in inspiration for Xiao, who travels great distances to find the perfect setting for his paintings.

Robert Stark - Stark is a luminist, painting principally in oil on canvas and panel. Luminism takes its name from light and refers to the subtle coloristic effects that sunlight, ever changing in intensity, produces on land, sea and in the sky. He sees the New England coast as a place where people have lived long and worked hard and feel part of the land and sea .He attended Nantucket schools and after graduating from Nantucket High School, served in the Navy during the Korean War. He is the most important living artist on the island.

Louis Guarnaccia - Louis was born in Omaha, NE in 1958. He has studied under Stanley Stephanowitz, Frank Novak at the Norwich Art School and Slater Museum in Norwich, CT, and Dean Keller, Ken Davies, and Rudolph Zallinger at the Paier College of Art in Hamden, CT. He eventually established his own privately-owned advertising agency and in 1996, Louis moved to Nantucket Island, MA. In 2000, he began painting full time, focusing on both portrait commissions and marine landscapes from around the island.

Alan Eddy - Alan J. Eddy was born in South Boston and attended the Vesper George School of Art in Boston. A scholar of New England maritime history, Eddy has had a lifelong connection to sea and the ships that sail upon her. Eddy is influenced by 19th Century American Luminists Fitz Hugh Lane, Martin Johnson Heade and Frederick Church and has made countless trips to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts to study their works. He has exhibited at the Mystic, CT International Marine Art shows, the American Watercolor Society, the National Academy of Design Galleries in New York City, and the Copley Society in Boston.

Jim Wolford - James Wolford is an American landscape painter with a focus on architectural subjects. After graduating from The Kansas City Art Institute in 1981, he attended Boston University to study under James Weeks, who is known for his classically influenced post-modern approach to figurative painting.  In 1991, his innovative use of color was recognized by an award from the Colorado Federation for the Arts. In 1996, he relocated to the coast of Maine, which has traditionally drawn artists to its rocky shores and historical villages. His work is featured on the cover of The Art of Monhegan Island, published in 2004.

Antonio Jacobsen - Jacobsen (1850-1921) was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1850 to a family of violin makers. He studied at the Royal Academy of Copenhagen before immigrating to the United States in 1871. He soon became America's most prolific marine artist, painting about 6,000 portraits of steamships that came into New York City harbor between 1876 and 1919. His work is found in numerous fine public and private collections including the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; the Philadelphia Maritime Museum, Philadelphia, PA; the New York Historical Society; the Peabody Essex Musuem, Salem, MA; Mystic Seaport Museum, Connecticut; Fall River Maritime Museum, MA; and the Louisiana State Museum.

William Stanley Haseltine - Haseltine (1835-1900) is one of the most well-known landscape painters of the 19th century. Born in Philadelphia, he studied at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University. He began exhibiting his works soon thereafter at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Haseltine is best known for his paintings of European seascapes and landscapes. He began his tour of Europe in Dusseldorf and then in Italy. He traveled extensively around the continent, from Capri to Venice, painting the Mediterranean Sea and the Venetian canals. He was an elected member of the National Academy of Design. His work is in the collections of major museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art.

Charles Temple Dix - Marine painter Charles Temple Dix (1838 – 1873) was born in Albany, New York into a notable family of American history. After studying at Union College in Schenectady for one year, he decided to pursue painting with the encouragement of the college president. In 1857, Dix trained with Edward Moran in Philadelphia, and began having exhibitions at the National Academy of Design in New York. After serving as a First Lieutenant in the Civil War, he sailed to Europe to continue his artistic training, and he never left. He spent his time regularly in Barcelona and Rome, where he stayed until his early death in 1873 at the age of thirty-three.

Harry Benson's "James Brown" Photo

Get On Up, the new biopic of James Brown starring Chadwick Boseman, is out on August 1st, and we hear that famed photographer Harry Benson is making a cameo!

One of his photos, that is! This iconic photo of James Brown is reportedly the opening shot of the film:

“In Augusta, to photograph James Brown, these pictures were taken when he suggested we go for a ride. He told me he would show me ‘his town.’ So we jumped into an old car and drove around. He would stop the car when he saw someone sitting in their yard, run up, do the split, yell out, ‘I feel good,’ and jump back in the car and drive off. It was all so spontaneous and hilarious, and it took the onlookers by such surprise. Brown was a fun-loving character and a good sport.”  (Harry Benson: Photographs, published by powerHouse Books)

Important Maritime Artists: Alfred Thompson Bricher

The next artist we are featuring from the Important Marine and Maritime Show is Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837 – 1908). Active in the later 19th century, Bricher is known for his Luminist work. Bricher was a New Englander through-and-through, as he was born in New Hampshire and grew up in Massachusetts. Most of his works are seascapes of the East Coast.

He is most known for his association with the Luminists. Luminism was an American style that was an offshoot of the Hudson River School in the 1850s to the 1970s. It is most often characterized by the atmospheric elements of a landscape, often a hazy sky over a body of water. These paintings often instill a sense of tranquility. The brushstrokes are not visible, but precise and hidden.

Important Maritime Artists: Reynolds Beal and Edward J. Holsag

The Important Marine & Maritime Paintings Show is on view now in Nantucket for the length of the summer. This exhibition represents some of the best and most renowned historical marine painters, as well as established contemporary artists.

Maritime and marine painting were particularly popular genres beginning in the 17^th century. These paintings depict ships at sea, often including human figures. They can also be purely seascapes, incorporating the water, sky, and the shoreline.

To give you more background on the show, we'll highlight a few of the major artists included in this show!

One great American landscape painter was Reynolds Beal, known for his contributions to American Impressionism.The American Impressionists followed the French masters and used very visible and thick brushstrokes in their landscapes. Beal studied with the one of the most important artists of this movement, William Merritt Chase. Beal's work is characterized by these brushstrokes, and their bright, intense colors.

A contemporary of Beal, Edward J. Holslag, created similar Impressionist works around the same time. He was a student of John LaFarge, an important French artist for the stained glass medium. Holslag was itinerat, always traveling around Europe and the United States. He is best known for a mural he painted in the Congress Hotel in Chicago in 1917. Similar to Beal, his paintings are have the characteristic Impressionist brushstrokes. Also like Beal, he painted Gloucester Harbor:

The exhibition runs until September in Nantucket.

Important Maritime Painting: Platt Powell Ryder

One of our featured paintings as part of the Important Marine & Maritime Paintings Exhibit  is a work by Platt Powell Ryder.

The Welcome Step, painted in 1883, is a piece of Nantucket maritime history. The scene depicts the home of Charles Myrick, captain of the Nantucket coastal trading vessel Abel Hoyt in the 1850s. Here, Myrick is returning home presumably after a voyage. 

Captain Myrick was first painted by Eastman Johnson in 1873 and again in 1880.  Platt Powell Ryder, like Eastman Johnson, turned to Nantucket interiors and its elderly whaling and seafaring men in the 1880s as they had become nostalgic symbols of Nantucket’s golden past by then. In “The Welcome Step,” Ryder concentrates on the commonplace incidents of everyday life such as a wife with dinner ready awaiting her husband’s return home. The painting skillfully conveys the message of delight using atmospheric lighting.  Mrs. Myrick is pictured in sharp focus looking pleased and ready to serve the soup at a dinner table composed as a beautiful still life.  The fire light gives the viewer the time of the narrative, evening.  The Captain appears out of the shadows with a paper and market basket over his arm. Ryder’s careful observation and skill integrate the whole into a cohesive painting.

Platt Powell Ryder was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1821.  He was a founding member of the Brooklyn Academy of Design, as he made his home in Brooklyn with a studio in New York.  Ryder’s family moved to New Orleans in the 1820’s which meant that Ryder studied art in New Orleans(1830s-1840s) then in Europe (1854-18570 and again in Paris with the famous figure painter Bonnat (1869).  Ryder began exhibiting at the National Academy of Design, New York in 1850 and was elected an Associate by 1868. The Brooklyn Museum, Yale University Art Gallery, and the Terra Museum of American Art have genre paintings by Ryder in their collections.

New Artists in Nantucket: Feuerman and Coe

We are excited to introduce Carole Feuerman and Nathan Coe to the Cavalier Gallery artist roster!

Both artists work with summery, island themes, which make them perfect additions to the gallery in Nantucket.

Carole Feuerman is internationally renowned for her hyper-realistic sculptures of women swimmers, as well as her prints. She has had six museum retrospectives, and has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Palazzo Strozzi Foundation, and the Kunstmuseum Ahlen, among many others. She has received the Amelia Peabody Award, the Betty Parson Award, the Lorenzo de Medici Prize, Best in Show at the 2008 Beijing Biennale and Olympics, and first prizes at the Austrian and Florence Biennale.  Many of her works are installed in public locations, and her career is quite prolific and continues to astound.

Nathan Coe joins us after already cultivating an established career in Nantucket. Coe studied in Cheltenham at the University of Gloucestershire, United Kingdom. After studying, Coe moved to Nantucket and quickly rose to prominence with his work at N Magazine. He became the Creative Director, running and shooting the entire magazine. While his career was taking off there, Coe decided to go out on his own to pursue fine-art and high-end photography, often shooting weddings and editorial fashion spreads.
