John Terelak, Contemporary Impressionist Painter

Contemporary impressionist John Terelak was born in Boston, Massachusetts and has flourished in the robust artistic community of Gloucester, MA for the last 50 years. Terelak began his studies at the Vesper George School of Fine Art, and went on to teach there, as well as founding his own school, the Gloucester Academy of Fine Arts.  After years of teaching, Terelak devoted himself to painting full time and has since enjoyed a very successful career.  In this work, we see the bustling marketplace of the historic Boston landmark, Faneuil Hall.  While Terelak finds inspiration for his work all around the world, his often returns to his roots in Boston, where he creates some of his strongest compositions.  In all of Terelak’s paintings, you find his distinctively fresh application of paint with rich plays of color and light. Terelak’s paintings are in private and corporate collections throughout the US, and have been included in exhibitions at The National Academy, The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, The Springfield Museums, as well as The Butler Institute of American Art.   View more work by John Terelak on our website

Larry Poons, Iconic Abstract Expressionist Painter

Larry Poons, born in 1937, continues to this day to produce impressive and fresh paintings as an icon of abstract expressionism.  Throughout his career, he has focused on bold abstraction and distinctive applications of paint to the canvas, often using unconventional methods such as pouring and throwing of paint. In this work, “Ballerina of Darts”, created in 2012, a series of small gestures and fields of color build across the canvas creating a truly dynamic composition. Poons began his artistic training in the 1950’s at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and achieved early success with a one-man show at the famed Green Gallery in 1963, followed by his inclusion in a 1965 exhibition at MoMa titled “The Responsive Eye”.  His work has been featured in numerous Museum exhibitions over the last five decades, and is also included in the permanent collections of such prestigious institutions as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; Solomon R. The exhibition will be on view in our New York location through December 2, 2016, with a reception Thursday, November 3 from 6-8pm. Established in 1986 in Stamford, Connecticut, Cavalier Galleries has since expanded to three premier exhibition spaces in New York City, Greenwich, Connecticut, and Nantucket, Massachusetts. Over the years, the gallery has grown to represent an impressive stable of painters, sculptors, and photographers working in a variety of genres.  The galleries feature rotating exhibitions focused on contemporary realism, important maritime paintings, abstract expressionism, regional landscapes, contemporary photography, and a diverse selection of sculptures. 150 Years of Great American Landscapes

Cavalier Galleries is pleased to announce an outstanding exhibition of landscape paintings, now open in our Greenwich, CT gallery. The exhibition highlights the development and diversity of landscape painting in America over the past century and a half, with a focus on regional works from New England and New York. Juxtaposing historical pieces with contemporary works, this special collection of American landscape paintings shows the continuity and changes in the genre over the last 150 years. Though landscape’s role in the art world has changed continuously, this important genre will not fall out of favor. Artists continue to paint what they see from their own unique perspectives, making each interpretation distinctly unique. This exhibition will showcase historic works by great masters such as John F. Luminous Plein Air painting by Joseph McGurl

Massachusetts artist, Joseph McGurl, is an accomplished contemporary landscape painter, often preferring to work en plein air so that he can immerse himself in his surroundings and interpret them on site.  He notably does not rely on photography in his work, choosing to leave the details to observation, memory, and imagination. Plein Air, Paddle Board is a fine example of his remarkable realism and distinctive technique in capturing the essence of the ocean. McGurl began his studies under his father, James McGurl, a highly regarded muralist. He furthered his studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and The Massachusetts College of Art, and he attended summer programs in London and Florence. While in Florence, he studied under Robert Cormier, a distinguished Boston artist devoted to French Academy methods.  Cormier had a strong influence on McGurl’s technique, teaching him the sight-size method which he often uses to approach his plein air works. McGurl is a member of the Plein Air Painters of America, and he was the youngest person ever to have won the John Singleton Copley Award from the Copley Society of Boston. He has also been honored with a Grumbacher Gold Medallion from the Guild of Boston Artists. McGurl's paintings have been included in several museum exhibitions throughout the country including the Cape Cod Museum of Art, The Cahoon Museum of American Art, and the Saint Botolph Club of Boston.

Contemporary realist master Nancy Depew

Contemporary artist Nancy Depew masterfully combines traditional realist technique with a modern approach to subject, resulting in vivid and provocative works.  Each delicate petal of a flower reveals itself as it is vibrantly illuminated against the deep background. This approach to composition is used in many of Depew’s works, allowing the artist and viewer to explore the intricate beauty and play of light on a single flower.  Depew studied at Lycoming College in Pennsylvania, and went on to receive her MFA from the University at Albany, State University of New York.  She has been honored with fellowships in her home state from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, as well as the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation Inc.  Depew has been exhibiting her work in galleries, museums, and art fairs throughout the US over the last several decades, while also teaching studio art and art history at art schools, museums, and other arts institutions. Depew says of her artwork: “I do not know what the finished painting will look like when I begin. I start with a gesture. It is a visual idea, an intuitive idea, not a verbal or rational one. I am not interested in documenting reality. I make three-dimensionally believable images, but I never think of them as ‘real.’  I am more interested in investigating the intuitive aspect of a subject. I dig into the nature of experience.”

Iconic photograph by Ruth Orkin

Ruth Orkin (American, 1921-1985) American Girl in Italy, 1951  Archival Fiber Baryta Pigment Print, 30 x 40 in. Award-winning photojournalist Ruth Orkin (1921-1985) was an adventurous traveler, with a camera always at the ready.  Throughout her career she photographed New York City street scenes and cityscapes, celebrities, and musicians, but the most noted image of her collection is certainly the “American Girl in Italy”.   In 1951, following an assignment in Israel, Ruth set out on her own to travel in Europe.  While in Florence, Italy she met Jinx Allen (Ninalee Craig) as both young, single, American women were traveling on their own and found themselves at the same hotel along the Arno River.  Connecting over their shared travel experiences, they set out with Jinx as model, and Ruth as photographer, to capture the reality of being an American girl in Italy. In this famed shot, Ruth Orkin captured the essence of the experience, the young woman having captivated every man on the block, admiring her with great enthusiasm as she struts by with confidence.  In the eyes of the model and photographer, this image was a celebration of strong, independent women who weren’t afraid to live life. Orkin returned to New York and in 1952 married the photographer and filmmaker Morris Engel. Together they produced two feature films, including the classic “Little Fugitive” which was nominated for an Academy Award in 1953. From their New York apartment overlooking Central Park, Orkin photographed marathons, parades, concerts, demonstrations, and the beauty of the changing seasons. These photographs were the subject of two widely acclaimed books, “A World Through My Window” and “More Pictures From My Window.” As a journalist, Orkin photographed for many prominent publishers including The New York Times andLIFE Magazine, and her images have been included in exhibitions at prominent New York museums including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of the City of New York, The Jewish Museum, and the International Center for Photography.  This photograph is a large scale print from the original negative.  It is from a limited edition, numbered 6/15.  The photograph is signed and titled on the back by Mary Engel, daughter of the photographer and director of the Ruth Orkin Estate.  It also includes an artist's embossed signature stamp on the front.   American Girl in Italy is priced at $8,500 (framing included). Thomas Kegler, born 1970, is a self-taught painter specializing in traditional American landscapes.  Kegler finds unlimited inspiration near his home in western New York, drawing upon the naturally majestic views of Niagara Falls and the Catskill Mountains, as well as coastal New England.  Using age-old painting techniques, he renders timeless landscapes that celebrate the splendor of his surroundings. A classical and dynamic realist painter, Sarah Lamb has a special talent for capturing minute details that highlight the beauty of everyday objects. Lamb’s still-lifes are often inspired by her love of cooking, with the artist selecting subjects from her own kitchen or local markets; sometimes with a nod to iconic still-life painter Wayne Thiebaud who is widely known for his colorful paintings of pastries and pies.  In this sweet little painting, Petite Cheesecake, her application of the paint to the canvas is refined, yet fresh, capturing this delectable treat in all its glory. Cavalier Galleries is pleased to present this unique group of new works by contemporary painter, Joel Carson Jones. As a master of trompe l'œil, Joel Carson Jones captures ordinary objects and brings them to life in a way in which the viewer cannot distinguish between painting and three-dimensional object. He creates a heightened sense of reality, while employing classical artistic elements of form and design. His tremendous skill in painting detailed compositions with a fresh approach to the still-life genre has earned Jones the honor of being named a “Living Master” by the prestigious Art Renewal Center. Many of his works have been awarded prizes in exhibitions held by the Art Renewal Center, and other prominent institutions such as the Butler Institute of American Art, and the Salmagundi Club. Joel Carson Jones was born in Pennsylvania in 1975, where he still lives and works.  He began his studies at Marywood University, and eventually went on to study with his contemporary Anthony Waichulis, who founded an atelier in Pennsylvania dedicated to this classical style of painting. Hans Hofmann: Pioneer of Abstract Expressionism

Hans Hofmann was born in Weissenburg, Bavaria in 1880. At the age of six, Hofmann and his family moved to Munich, and he began to study painting at Moritz Heymann’s art school. He then studied for ten years in Paris, where he met influential contemporary painters such as Matisse and Picasso. During the First World War, Hofmann opened the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in Munich. As Nazi oppression grew during the early 1930s, Hofmann fled to New York City, where he opened the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in Manhattan in 1934, and in 1935 heintroduced the famed summer outpost of his school in Provincetown, MA. Hofmann’s impressive roster of students included many artists who would go on to achieve great recognition, such as Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell, Wolf Kahn, Lee Krasner, Carl Holty, Louise Nevelson, Robert De Niro Sr., and Frank Stella. Along with his notability as an influential teacher, Hofmann soon came to be recognized as a leading figure in the American Abstract Expressionistmovement. In 1944, Hofmann’s first major exhibition in New York was organized by Peggy Guggenheim and held at the Art of This Century Gallery, followed in 1947 by an exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts organized by Betty Parsons. In 1957, the Whitney Museum of American Art hosted a major retrospective of Hofmann’s work which travelled to seven additional US Museums over the next year. During his lifetime, his work was exhibited and acquired by notable collectors and museums including the Addison Gallery of American Artin Andover, Massachusetts, Musée de Grenoble in France, Joseph H. Hirshhorn, and the Museum of Modern Art. Hofmann’s workis now represented in the permanent collections of major museums world-wide.  In 1946, the year that Hofmann created Taurus, the noted American art critic, Robert Coates, first coined the term “abstract expressionism”, referring to Hofmann’s work as such in his review of an exhibit at the Mortimer Brant Gallery in New York. Taurus is an excellent example of Hofmann’s works from that period, showing “push and pull”, a term Hofmann often used in his writings on art theory to describe the “play between color, shape, and placement on a surface to create competing forces that produce depth within a flat surface.” Please contact the gallery for additional details: art@cavaliergalleries.com or 508.325.4405
